Social image sizes

Open Graph images are served at 1200 × 630 pixels — a 1.91:1 ratio that Facebook, LinkedIn and Slack all crop to. Most platforms accept that single image, but a few use their own ratio, so it is worth knowing where the differences are before you commit to one asset.

PlatformRecommended sizeAspect ratioNotes
Open Graph (Facebook, LinkedIn, Slack)1200 × 6301.91:1The safe default. One 1200 × 630 image covers Facebook, LinkedIn and Slack link unfurls.
X — summary_large_image1200 × 6281.91:1Used when your page declares twitter:card as summary_large_image. Near-identical to Open Graph, so the same file works.
X — summary1200 × 12001:1The small square card. X falls back to this when no large-image card is declared.
Pinterest1000 × 15002:3Vertical by design. A 1.91:1 image is heavily letterboxed here, so generate a separate asset if Pinterest matters.
WhatsApp400 × 4001:1Thumbnails are cropped to a square. Keep the important content centred or it will be cut off.

Limits and gotchas

  • Keep the file under 5 MB. Facebook accepts up to 8 MB, but X rejects anything larger than 5 MB.
  • Use PNG or JPG. SVG is not supported by any major crawler, and WebP support is inconsistent.
  • Keep text within the central 80% of the frame. Different platforms crop the edges by different amounts.
  • Do not upscale beyond 1200 × 630. Platforms downscale for display, and larger files slow down the first unfurl.

Troubleshooting

Most Open Graph problems are caching or URL issues rather than problems with the image itself.

The preview still shows the old image

Platforms cache aggressively. Force a re-scrape with the Facebook Sharing Debugger, the X Card Validator, or LinkedIn's Post Inspector. Changing the image URL also works.

No image appears at all

og:image must be an absolute URL including the scheme and host. Relative paths such as /og.png are ignored by every crawler.

The image works in a browser but not when shared

Check that the image is not behind authentication, a paywall, or a robots.txt rule. Crawlers fetch it anonymously.

The card renders small or reflows after a moment

Declare og:image:width and og:image:height. Without them the platform must download the image before it can size the card.

The image is blank or corrupt on one platform only

Re-export as PNG or JPG. WebP and AVIF are still unevenly supported, and animated formats are never used for previews.
